The fastest BMW in the 02 Series was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1973 – the legendary BMW 2002 turbo. A turbocharger, the first in a European production car, gave the already rugged injection engine of the 2002 tii an additional 40 bhp.
The BMW 2002 turbo had a top speed of more than 210 km/h but was launched during the oil crisis and therefore remained rather marginal. All but eight cars were painted in Chamonix (white) or Polaris (silver) metallic.
