The Ferrari 335 S won the 1957 World Sports Car Championship powered by its 4 litre V12 engine with an output of around 390 hp. Four of these hugely desirable cars were built, often based on renumbered predecessor models. This 335 S with chassis number 674 was part of Pierre Bardinon’s legendary collection at Mas du Clos for over 40 years. However, the car had even more illustrious motor-sport provenance than had been known for many years previously. When the new film ‘Ferrari’ by Michael Mann was made, with the spotlight primarily on the 1957 season, this 335 S was meticulously examined and analysed in order to build replicas for the film shoot. The sports car had been in the 1957 Mille Miglia with chassis number 656, powered by the 3.8 litre 315 S engine. Later on, it campaigned with the 674 chassis number for the 335 S engine. Chassis number 626 was also found for the 290 MM piloted by racing great Juan Manuel Fangio, finishing fourth in the 1956 Mille Miglia. Complicated, or what? Yes, but by no means unusual. This Ferrari racing car has seen many legends and World Champions at the wheel. In 1957, Peter Collins and Maurice Trintignant took turns at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Count Berghe von Trips drove with start number 532 in the Mille Miglia. He was asked by Enzo Ferrari not to attack his team-mate Piero Taruffi, and had he not obeyed the order handed down by the boss, he would have won the Mille Miglia that year rather than a second placing. After the Mille Miglia in June 1957, the car was converted into a 335 S. Unfortunately, Mike Hawthorn and Luigi Musso were forced to retire from the Le Mans with engine failure. In 1958, Stirling Moss won the Cuba Grand Prix in Havana driving this car. The Ferrari 335 S bears witness to the golden era of sports-car racing and its combination of power, style, and racing success testifies to its place among the most revered race cars in automotive history.
