This example of the English coupé legend is known in aficionado circles as VMF 64 on account of its registration number. VMF 64 is regarded as the most successful of the five works cars that at the time gave Aston Martin its reputation as the manufacturer of genuine sports cars capable of taking on the international competition. Starting in 1950, the wins achieved by VMF 64 included two class victories at Le Mans and a matching duo of class wins at the Mille Miglia and without major repairs. Over the course of the sports car’s career, VMF 64 campaigned in a total of nine relentless races – and took the chequered flag in all of them. In 1952, Aston Martin celebrated these triumphs achieved by VMF 64 as the star of the London Motor Show at Earl’s Court. Company owner and former racing driver David Brown then adopted the coupé as his company car – until 1957 when the Honourable Gerald Lascelles, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth, succeeded in persuading Brown to sell his fabulous DB2. Lascelles’ family had a tenure for five decades as steward of this remarkable car. As recently as 2009, VMF 64 came into the hands of a German collector, who then passed it on to The Golden Age Collection in Germany. Today, this DB2 is presented in unique, original condition.
