In parallel to the series development of the BMW M1, the racing versions for Group 4 and 5 were built. The Group 4 M1, built in Munich, Italy, and England in cooperation with specialized companies, was eventually used in the Procar series created by Jochen Neerpasch, the Head of BMW Motorsport GmbH. From 1979 onwards, the five fastest Formula 1 drivers in each training session before a Formula 1 Grand Prix, raced against around 20 private international teams on equally powerful M1 cars. This concept proved to be a huge attraction for the audience, with Formula 1 drivers such as Niki Lauda, Nelson Piquet, Carlos Reutemann, Alan Jones, and Clay Regazzoni participating. Additionally, one must not forget the highly dedicated drivers from the international teams, such as Hans-Joachim Stuck, Marc Surer, and Markus Höttinger.
