GRANDE VITESSE: PRE-WAR WEEKEND RACERSVincenzo Lancia was famous for his innovative motor cars. The Lancia Lambda has the general reputation of being his greatest masterpiece. The Lancia Patent described an innovative vehicle construction which no longer used a separate chassis. Rather, the body took on the role of the stress-bearing structure for the vehicle. Lancia also introduced independent suspension for the wheels on the front axle. A short V4 engine was mounted in order to optimise driving performance.
The Lancia Lambda shown here at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este was purchased by its first owner directly off the stand at the Milan Auto Salon in 1924. The coachbuilder Mario Casaro from Turin was a good friend of Vincenzo Lancia and he subsequently bodied the three cars that campaigned in the Mille Miglia in 1928 and 1929. The current owner has been the fifth custodian of this automobile since 2018 and he put the car through a faithful, authentic restoration between 2019 and 2022
