BMW manufactures automobiles, motorcycles and indeed scooters. Meanwhile, engines and motorcycles represent the very beginnings of the company. We look back with pride and pleasure on our heritage as one of the oldest manufacturers of motorcycles in the world. We are conscious of the diverse history of our brand while at the same time enjoying a very successful present and looking forward to an equally prestigious future. BMW Motorrad achieved yet another sales record in the year 2013. The company came out of 2013 having sold 115,215 motorcycles and maxi-scooters. This represented growth of 8.3 % and we were once again market leader in Germany, Italy and Spain for the segment above 500 cc displacement.
From 1929 to 1937, the BMW brand and its equally courageous and prolific record-breaking rider Ernst Henne were responsible for records of a very different kind in the form of the absolute World Speed Record for Motorcycles. We present his record-breaking motorcycle, now 85 years old, alongside the 77-year-old advanced version with aerodynamic fairing for the first time, together with a number of other motorcycles ridden by contemporary racing riders of the era. However, motorcycle history is not simply a matter of superlative technical performances or flamboyant design inspirations. Initiatives taken by owners to create their very own motorcycles reflecting their own ideas have also been a continual source of admiration throughout motorcycle history. We want to mark this growing trend with a show of “Customised Bikes” that owners have created from different BMW series models according to their own ideals.
