The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este first took place in 1929 and is still regarded as the world’s most prestigious beauty contest of its kind, steeped in rich tradition. Following the Second World War the event was forgotten, until 1995 when Villa d’Este and Jean-Marc Droulers, former CEO of the Hotel, decided to re-launch the Concorso. Since 1999, it has been held under the patronage of the BMW Group and the event has been continuously developed since then. The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013 has a very varied programme which enhances the exclusive atmosphere for its participants while at the same time giving a wide public audience the opportunity to experience the “Days of Elegance” at Lake Como together with true fans of classic automobiles and motorcycles.
Continuing the tradition of previous years, the gates of Villa Erba open on Friday evening with the screening of a film at the open-air cinema. A great programme will also be presented with the “Days of Elegance” held on Saturday and Sunday at the same location. Alongside the “Concorso di Motociclette”, successfully launched in 2011, you will be presented with the special exhibitions on “90 Years of BMW Motorrad” and “60 Years of Corvette”.
Moreover, on Saturday evening there will be another spectacular auction staged by RM Auctions with around 40 extraordinary automobiles to come under the hammer. The heart of the Concorso d’Eleganza continues to beat in front of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este. On Saturday, 49 unique automobiles will appeal for the votes of the invited guests and of the Jury.
In keeping with tradition, all the entrants and their cars, whether vintage, concept or prototype, will parade in front of the public at Villa Erba on Sunday. The contest for the best design of the latest concept cars was introduced in 2002. It deliberately linked the Concorso of today with the successful beginning of this event in 1929. The purpose at that time was to present to a selected public audience in the park of Villa d’Este the latest creations of the most important coachbuilders and manufacturers of the era as they competed for the Coppa d’Oro.
