Days of Elegance
The arrival on Friday, May 24th 2013, is all about expectations and anticipation for an exciting and eventful weekend. The participants taking part in the Concours d’Elegance in the categories “Historic Cars”, “Concept Cars & Prototypes” and “Motorcycles” arrive in the picturesque town of Cernobbio with their vehicles. If you don’t have a vehicle, you can also experience the Concours Weekend at first hand as a “Friend of Concorso”. The package provides exclusive access to all the programme highlights reserved for participants, such as the parade of vehicles in the grounds of Villa d’Este on Saturday afternoon and the Gala Dinner as the crowning conclusion to the event on Sunday evening.
Representatives of the international press also make their way to Lake Como every year in order to report on the events in special-interest magazines for vehicle aficionados all over the world.
The two mainstays of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este are Villa d’Este itself and Villa Erba. The events in the programme reserved exclusively for the participants in the competitions “Historic Cars” and “Concept Cars & Prototypes” take place in the grounds and the rooms of Villa d’Este. As a counterpoint, the “Days of Elegance” will be held in the nearby park of Villa Erba, which will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors here have the opportunity to admire themed exhibitions of important vehicles. This is also the third year after the launch of the now firmly established Motorcycle Concours. It celebrates the opening of the Public Days with a “Street Run” of a number of historic motorcycles – accompanied by a police escort. On Friday evening, a free open-air cinema event will be held in the park of Villa Erba. The film Best Offer will be screened in Italian without subtitles. Entry is free of charge.
The Motorcycle Concours offers private collectors and fans of classic two-wheelers the opportunity to enter their most precious vehicles and compete in a contest assessed by an international Jury. This year, the special exhibition being held in the exhibition hall of Villa Erba presents “90 Years of BMW Motorrad”. Visitors will have the privilege of seeing an exceptional collection of prototypes, victorious motorcycles in major races, and much more. The Days of Elegance are completed by a collection of the Corvette, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.
On Saturday, 25th May 2013, the gates of Villa Erba are open to the public from 10.00 to 17.00.
The special exhibition to celebrate the 90th anniversary of BMW Motorrad invites visitors to take a stroll and engage in discussion with like-minded people. The Motorcycle Concours presents a wide selection of historic two-wheelers from yesteryear. The Jury will use a variety of criteria to appraise and assess the vehicles taking part in the Concours, and everybody can be really close to the action. The legendary Klemm L25 – Germany’s oldest aircraft – also occupies a place of honour during the Days of Elegance. A range of sales stands offer accessories and snacks for visitors. At the same time, the Parade of Historic Cars takes place in Villa d’Este, reserved exclusively for invited guests.
Prizes are awarded for a wide range of categories. They are as follows:
- Trofeo BMW Group Classic for the most sensitive restoration
- Trofeo Rolls-Royce for the most elegant Rolls-Royce
- Trofeo FIVA for the best preserved pre-war car
- Trofeo ASI for the best preserved post-war car
- Trofeo Vranken Pommery for the most iconic car
- Trofeo Foglizzo for the best interior design

The highlight of the parade is the award of the “Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este” – the Public Prize for the most beautiful vehicle.
Anyone who would like to experience live the unique automobiles participating in the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is warmly invited to the grounds of Villa Erba on Sunday 26th May from 09.30 to 17.30. There all the historic vehicles, and concept cars and prototypes participating in this event will be on display. The exhibitions from Saturday will still be open and will provide memorable experiences on many aspects of classic automobiles and two-wheelers.
The Motorcycle Concours will take place at 11.00. Prizes will be awarded to each of the class winners and the international Jury will explain its decisions. A warm invitation is extended to everyone to attend the awards for the “Best of Show” with the BMW Group Trophy at the close of the event.
After a short break the parade of all the historic vehicles, concept cars and prototypes will be held at 14.30. Each of the nine class winners will be presented individually to the public and the Jury will elucidate the key criteria that informed their decisions. The highlight is the “Best of Show by Public Referendum”, the BMW Group Italia Trophy in the category Historic Cars. The public also votes on the award for the most beautiful automobile from the class “Concept Cars & Prototypes”. This car receives the equally prestigious “Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award”. The Trofeo BMW Group Ragazzi is the latest addition to the awards: this contest is judged by young people up to the age of 16 years.
In the evening, the prize for the “Best of Show by the Jury” is awarded in front of all the invited guests, participants and Friends of Concorso during a Gala Dinner at the Villa d’Este, culminating in a fireworks display over Lake Como. The evening ends with “Dance the night away” as a fitting celebration to bring the weekend to a close and allow all those present to look forward to the next Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 2014.
